Do you want to keep a copy of the DVD files instead of stacking discs? Can't you directly transfer DVD files on your hard drive? Why is that? Some DVDs are equipped with copyright protection, making it difficult to copy them now on your PC. Have you ever heard about Sony ARccOS protection, or Disney DVD Protection, or DVDs from Blu-ray being protected? Just use a program that can rip DVD to hard drive for you and help you save the DVD content to your hard-drive.
